Cutting 3D CAD - CAM Engineering

Steel Dynamics extensively use 3D CAD (Computer Aided Design) software in the design and development of complex engineered products.

One such product is a technically challenging, engineered pattern on the bottom of a cast iron ventilation column which is destined to be sited on the river Thames in London.

The pattern has been designed by architects to represent Shells, Waves and Pebbles.

Steel Dynamics has engineered the 2D architect sketch into 3D geometry and wrapped around the complex 3D surface of the ventilation column.

After the CAD work is complete, the 3D model is then given to the 3D CAM (Computer Aided Manufacture) software for the programmes to be created.

Once the programmes are created and checked they are post-processed (translated to machine-tool language) for use on a 5-axis CNC machine tool.

The execution of this architect's requirements is only possible because of the specialist team at Steel Dynamics and their valued partners, and the investment in cutting edge software.
